Current Events

Current Events will play a big role in our classroom this year, helping us to connect what we see and hear in the news with what we are learning in the classroom.  More importantly, I want students to understand why news is important in our daily lives and how news affects us, as well as those around us.  We will categorize our current events into 4 different categories: Local (news in our immediate area), State (news that happens in Iowa), National (news from anywhere in the U.S.), and Global (news happening in other parts of the world).  Each month, students will be responisible for bringing a current event to share with the class.  Students can use several sources for locating a current event such as: newspapers, television news, or internet news sites.  Prior to sharing, the student will need to fill out a Current Events Organizer answering the 5 W's: Who, What, When, Where, and Why, as well as how that particular event impacts his/her own life.  The student will also need to put their event into one of the 4 categories of news, listed above.  Each month, half of the class will post their current events information on this blog while the other half of the class posts their current events in the 4th grade hallway.  Each student will alternate between blog posts and hallway posts each month.  I will spend the month of September talking about and researching current events with the whole class, and individual assignments will begin in October.  Be sure to check your student's assignment book or this blog for due dates!
